Now is the time to encourage the little chemical messengers that help you get into your labor groove.
Your baby is going to release some chemicals that tell your body that he or she is ready to be born.
Prostaglandins have hormone-like qualities (mediators) to help your cervix soften, open, and thin out. They also help uterus contract.
-Who needs to be induced?
Medical: Mom or baby has a medical problem (prelabor rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, poor fetal growth), baby over due-date by 7 to 14 days
-How does induction of labor work?
*Based on the Bishop’s Score: Dilation, effacement, station, position, consistency of your cervix
Less than 6 cervix: not very inducible (needs cervical ripening agent for successful vaginal birth)
Greater than 8 cervix: inducible
Mechanical Induction:
-Stripping membranes: the release of prostaglandins and cervical dilation
-Rupture membranes: the release of prostaglandins
-Laminaria: cervix dilates with seaweed use
-Foley catheter bulb: cervix dilates with bulb use
Medical Induction:
-Prostaglandin E2 (Cervidil):
-Prostaglandin E1 (Cytotec):
-Oxytocin (Pitocin) Used when cervix is ripe is greater than 6
Natural Induction:
