13.5. Wire scaling At one point in time, gate delay dominated the timing of circuits. This is no longer the case. In the best case wires are as important as gates. In most practical situations wire delay is even more important than gate delay. Scaling down circuits is one of the most important drivers of CMOS, but it is also the driver of wire delay. Wire delay scales terribly, and it’s all about resistance and chip size.
