The 2004 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Championship at Rupp Arena matched the 4th Region Champions Warren Central (28-7) against 10th Region Champions Mason County (33-2). This was the first postseason meeting between the two teams, and the second meeting ever at that point. The two had previously played in a 50-47 Mason County victory in 1987. They would meet again in the Sweet 16 in 2006, with Mason County winning 62-59 in the first round. Warren Central entered this contest on a 20 game win streak, while Mason County had won 17 in a row - neither team had lost since January. Mason County entered the game nationally ranked and were the defending champions - seeking the first back to back titles in the state since Fairdale in the early 90s. Warren Central would win this game 66-56 to win their (to date) only state championship. Including this game, Warren Central would only play one game of their 21 game win streak to a margin of less than ten points, winning by four over Covington Catholic in the state semifinals.
