A Conversation with Zyahna Bryant In Conjunction With The Exhibition A Place Fit for Women

A Conversation with Zyahna Bryant In Conjunction With The Exhibition A Place Fit for Women The exhibition, A Place Fit for Women on view through April 18, consisted of fourteen works from Americans Who Tell the Truth, the portrait series by Maine artist Robert Shetterly. During 2020 several of Shetterly's images were shown throughout Charlottesville however, A Place Fit for Women was unique owing to its focus on portraits of African American women. Mounted in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, JSAAHC's exhibition brought together images of black women, organized chronologically, in order to highlight the often overlooked yet extensive history of black women's involvement in American policy making. These women including Ida B.Wells, Marian Wright Edelman and Alicia Garza have been courageous advocates of women and children's rights, education, environmental policy and most importantly justice for all. During 2020, Shetterly added four Charlottesville based subjects to the series one of which was of the portrait of Zyahna Bryant. Before the show closed, exhibition curator Andrea Douglas interviewed Bryant about what it means to have her portrait painted amongst other things.
