Current school model 'child minding, not education': PM

Current school model 'child minding, not education': PM Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he would have his children back at school in a “heartbeat” if they were going to be taught, warning the current model is essential "child minding”, not education.

Mr Morrison has been emphatic in his call for students to return to schools, insisting the health advice is that it’s safe for them to do so.

However, the states have insisted kids should learn at home if they are able to do so and that schools will only remain open for students of essential workers.

Mr Morrison on Wednesday said his children will return as soon as the school goes beyond “looking at a screen”.

“I kept my kids in school till the last week because they weren’t getting taught in school in that last week, they were looking at a screen, that’s not teaching that’s child minding,” he said.

It isn't just about, you know, that kids can can go along and sit in a hall and be minded, we want them to get educated.

"We’re on school holidays in NSW so the kids are at home but I’d have them back in a heartbeat if they were getting taught at school... but at the moment we’re lucky they can have a learning environment at home.”
