One thing I have been struggling with my entire life is trusting myself. And as much as I wanted to believe that I was "oh so independent", I consistently relied on other people and what they think.
Not trusting that I am making the right decisions.
Not trusting that I am doing the right thing.
Am I journaling correctly?
Not trusting that what I have created is good enough.
Am I picking these weights up the right way?
Trusting in others so much so that my business started suffering.
It's ridiculous how people start losing themselves through this. I mean, I have, hence this video.
Why have we become so reliant on other people?
Why do we care so much about what others think or say about us?
Why does our own self-worth depend on the number of likes our social media posts get?
In a moment I'd like to share some of the things that I started doing to help me overcome this burden of not trusting myself.
In life, we always seem to turn to others for everything: Our happiness, approval, love, affection.
I for one found myself in a situation where whenever I would write an article, build a website, launch a product, whatever the case, I would turn to someone to ask "their opinion".
At first, I thought it was just an innocent "survey" if you will, but the more I started doing it, the more it became apparent that I was relying on those people to either say... Yay or Nay.
Their opinion was all I needed. One person likes what I wrote, amazing. I can publish it.
Oh but, the other person didn't like it. What do I do? (look confused...)
So you just end up feeling bad... and probably don't publish at all. What, just because of 1 person's opinion? Pfft. Come on now...
We expect other people to solve our problems. We ask "gurus" for advice on how to live. How to be rich. How to be happy. We use medication when we’re in pain.
The thing is that when we start looking at ourselves, we never consider that we might not need those things. Don't take being part of society too far. You might end up losing yourself becoming that robot.
You don't need that new $5,000 money making course by that guru on Facebook.
You don't need the latest fitness workout by that popular dude on YouTube.
You don't need the latest diet sold by the lady with that butt, to get the results you want.
My challenge to you is to start relying on yourself more. And not in a selfish way of course, but learn to trust yourself more. Both intellectually, physically as well as emotionally. You really do not need others to be happy or successful in life.
Now, before some of you start saying...
"yeah buddy, what am I just supposed to go through life alone?"... that's not what I'm getting at.
The point is that we need to learn how to trust our gut again. Trust that all the answers lie within us.
The great Ralph Waldo Emerson said -
“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.” -
Does any of the following apply to you and if so, I'd love to hear from you in the comments below?
- Do you feel that your friends should always be there for you?
- Find it difficult being alone?
- Feel hurt if someone doesn't invite you somewhere?
- Do you always ask others for their advice on how YOU did your project?
- Find yourself feeling stuck at work because you started relying so much on others that you cannot move forward?
- Expecting your partner to make you happy?
- Do you get upset when people critique your work?
And what do all of these questions have in common?
They will all set you up for disappointment.
So with that out of the way, here are a few things that have helped me in my pursuit of... eh, "trusting myself more" (pause and look confused...)
All revealed in the video :)
