First, there are our brothers and sisters in Detroit at Local 58. They’re working with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Conti Corporation, and Ferndale Electric. They’ve had 20 electricians working around-the-clock since March 21st to turn the TCF Convention Center into a 900-bed facility. The convention center is now an army-filled hospital poised to help Detroit with their influx of patients. Also in Detroit, our brother and sisters are converting several manufacturing facilities into plants that specialize in making masks, shields, and ventilators.
In addition, in southern California, our brothers and sisters are working to support the infrastructure needed to supply the large hospitals in the area. Furthermore, IBEW local 1 is working in St. Louis, focusing on power for testing stations and triage units at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield. They’ve installed lighting and heaters in several tents, as well as power for a supply trailer.
Furthermore, member Andrew Pannell from local 494 in Milwaukee dropped off food to staff at Aurora Health St. Luke’s Medical Center. He can be seen happily interacting with staff in the photos posted to his social media. Also, local 103 in Boston has donated a significant amount of materials. Business manager Lou Antonellis posted photos to his Instagram showing him donating the first shipment of 20,000 N95 safety masks. Local 103 donates the masks to local doctors, first responders, and hospitals. Finally, in San Diego, local 465 donated food to families out of work or in need. In just one day, they provided food for 1,000 families. They said of their generosity: “Solidarity is the language of the working class, and it roars loudest in our time of need.”
We’re looking for other IBEW members who are doing their part, so remember to tag IBEWHOURPOWER in your social media posts, and we look forward to getting to as many as possible in the next edition of IBEW Hour Power.
